Welcome to Connect a new annual publication looking at SNV’s work around the world. The past year has been an exciting one for SNV. We have welcomed a new CEO and a new supervisory board, formulated a new strategy for the years to 2015 and are now undergoing a process of adjusting our structure and honing our approach to ensure we have maximum impact in the fight against poverty in the years to come. The world of development has seen some significant changes in recent years. As both our CEO Allert van den Ham and CSIS’ Dan Runde emphasise in their interviews in this issue of Connect, the global climate of austerity has seen a renewed drive for tangible development results. No longer is it enough to trust in good intentions, the world’s taxpayers and donors demand a proven return on investment. There is also a growing awareness that development impact is driven locally - and that is exactly where SNV’s strength lies. With more than 40 years of on-the-ground experience behind us, SNV has learnt the importance of listening to local stakeholders and understanding their challenges, dreams and aspirations. We’ve learnt that for change to truly be sustainable, development initiatives have to be both locally owned and inclusive. We’ve learnt that to be successful, development solutions need to be tailored to local contexts and conditions. And perhaps most importantly, we’ve learnt that it is impossible to open a road out of poverty without changing the underlying systems that keep inequality in place. This is our vision of smart development and these lessons are what will drive our approach in the years ahead. Over the past year, SNV’s programmes in the field have contributed to improved livelihoods and living conditions for more than 9 million people. By 2015, we aim to have had a positive impact on more than 40 million. It’s ambitious – but we believe in thinking big. Every one of these people has their own story to share, and this publication aims to share some of these stories with you. Thank you for joining us on this journey through the work of SNV around the world, I hope you enjoy the ride! Arthur Arnold Chairman, SNV Supervisory Board Pagina 1
