Impact Investment Advisory Services Impact Investment is increasingly being recognised as an effective way of addressing social or environmental challenges while also generating financial returns. It’s a win-win proposition for both investors and society. SNV’s Impact Investment Advisory Service (IIAS) has been established to target the “missing middle” – those entrepreneurs in the developing world who fall squarely between microfinance and conventional commercial financing. These Small and Medium Enterprises represent the most overlooked and underserved actors globally, yet they are responsible for creating the majority of jobs and income growth in many developing countries. We launched our Impact Investment Advisory Service in 2008 and after a pilot period, which saw the initiative facilitating investments from thirdparty funds, it was integrated it into SNV’s existing value chain development practice. Today we work on two levels to facilitate impact investments. We partner with investment funds with an interest in directly supporting disadvantaged indigenous enterprises and groups at the grassroots level, while also identifying similar groups and preparing them, through capability development, for investments from impact investors. In the past year, SNV has facilitated more than $10 million in direct social and impact investments and access-to-finance for 13 indigenous agribusinesses in Eastern and Southern Africa – and we’re just getting started!
