Inclusive Business: making markets work for the poor The Inclusive Business concept was developed through an alliance between SNV and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) to create win-win situations for both companies and low-income communities. The world over, large companies traditionally buy from established suppliers and service providers and target middle- and high-income consumers. As a result, poor people find many essential goods and services too expensive and, as producers, struggle to sell enough to make a living. Our pioneering work in Inclusive Business works to break this cycle by introducing businesses to low-income communities and creating mutuallybeneficial links. With our advice and support, companies gain access to a wider pool of quality producers, while low-income communities have the opportunity to become employees, suppliers and small investors – as well as consumers. In this way, Inclusive Business contributes towards poverty alleviation, including low-income communities within the value chains of companies while not losing sight of the ultimate goal of business – making a profit. Starting out in Latin America, where more than 100 thriving Inclusive Businesses already pay testament to the model’s success, benefiting over 20,000 people, SNV’s advisors are now working with large companies, small producers, service providers and distributors in Asia and Africa to spread the success and help thousands more people discover the road from poverty to prosperity in 2012.
