Our partners Changing lives with cleaner cookstoves As a founding partner of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, SNV is championing change in the kitchen. Exposure to smoke from traditional cookstoves and open fires – the primary means of cooking and heating for nearly three billion people in developing countries – causes two million premature deaths annually, with women and young children the most affected. Clean cookstoves and fuels can dramatically reduce fuel consumption and exposure to cookstove smoke. Recognising the need to promote clean cookstove use, SNV became a founding partner of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, a publicprivate initiative that aims to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women and combat climate change by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced the formation of the Alliance at the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting. Public organisations including the World Bank and the United “The benefits from this initiative will be cleaner and safer homes, and that will, in turn, ripple out for healthier families, stronger communities, and more stable societies.” US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton Nations, private companies such as Morgan Stanley and Dow Corning, and numerous NGOs have all joined the Alliance. The Alliance seeks to have 100 million homes adopt clean and efficient stoves and cooking fuels by 2020, and has made significant strides to achieve this goal over the past year. In November 2011, the Alliance released a report entitled Igniting Change: A Strategy for Universal Adoption of Clean Cookstoves and Fuels. The report outlines a three-part strategy for creating such a market by focusing on enhancing demand, strengthening supply, and fostering an enabling environment for clean cookstoves and fuels. This spring, China became the 33rd country to join the Alliance, announcing its intention to promote the usage of clean cooking solutions. 38 CONNECT #1 JULY 2012 Pagina 37
