10 1 2 3 6 CONNECT #1 MAY 2012 JULY 2012 HIGHLIGHTS 2011 SNV worked to bring positive change to the lives of more than 9 million people around the world in 2011. From brokering a fair deal for farmers, to researching eco-friendly energy alternatives and even creating new markets, these are just a few of the ways we helped make a difference. 6 3 With help from SNV and partners, the Anolei women of Isiolo in northern Kenya have discovered that camel milk has the potential not just to help feed families, but to build businesses. So far the programme has provided 100 pastoralist households with a sustainable income of around $650 per month, with interest from both local distributors and exporters promising a bright future for this drought-resistant alternative to traditional livestock in the Horn of Africa. Biogas has made a difference in the life of millions of people in Asia through providing clean household energy, as well as income and employment. SNV’s success formula – biodigester construction enabled through the combination of trained masons, credit facilities and public policy – is now being replicated in Africa and Indonesia. Biogas has reached 65,000 new households in 2011, bringing the total number of families who have benefited from our biogas programmes since 2005 to over 420,000. Inclusive Business leads the way in Latin America, where we helped over 200,000 low-income people increase their employment and production through agricultural inclusive businesses in 2011. Focusing on promoting business relationships between medium or large companies and smallholder producers, we have designed and implemented 18 business models in sectors from dairy to coffee, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, and organic bananas. 4 5 Washington DC In Albania, the Albanian Local Capacity Development Facility (ALCDF) launched its Partnership for Innovation Fund in 2011. The fund has since supported 81 rural organisations and enterprises to access the services they need to improve their capacity and build their business. From feasibility studies to help in business planning, increasing production, expanding markets, and even improving local infrastructure, ALCDF enabled access to over €250,000 in contracted services in 2011. That’s good for everyone’s business. More than 127,000 people around Asia have gained improved living conditions through improvements in sanitation and hygiene enabled through SNV’s Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All programme (SSH4A). What’s the secret? Building demand for sanitation at a community level. In many villages in South Asia, women are now pledging not to marry a man who hasn’t built a toilet for his home. That’s real local demand! 6 Renewable Energy is high on the agenda for SNV in Latin America. In 2011, we developed five renewable energy inclusive businesses in El Salvador, Honduras and Peru, and helped four eco-businesses representing 200 small producers improve their capacity to produce bio-ethanol and biogas. We also continued our contribution to research and public policy – including working with the Honduran Ministry of Natural Resources to produce the “Guide to Best Environmental Practices Pagina 5
