In Burkina Faso, more than 10,000 women are getting ahead in the shea nut business with a little help from SNV. The Fadefso and Nununa female producers’ associations have become successful social enterprises focusing on the collection, storage and marketing of shea nuts for shea butter (used to make both cosmetics and chocolate). The women have boosted their incomes by up to 95%, along with benefiting from social services like health insurance and education provided by the associations. 8 By bring rice farmers and millers together with the common goal of improving quality, the Enhancing Milled Rice Production in Lao PDR (EMRIP) Project has been able to improve the livelihoods of over 21,000 smallholders. By rewarding millers for investing their time and money in improving the capacity of small producers, the project has brought buyers and sellers together and enabled significant increases in rice quality. The result? Crop yields are up 30% and farmers’ incomes have risen 9 Over 50% of our funding was spent on 16% Asia 10% Latin America 6% Balkans 12% Head Office & SNV USA 60% due to higher yields and better prices, while millers are enjoying higher profits and throughput. Everyone wins. In Ethiopia, SNV saw a link between poor school attendance and menstrual hygiene management amongst school girls. By joining with local schools, district authorities, a textile factory and a vocational education centre a solution was found in the local production of sanitary pads, which are now distributed through schools along with information on menstrual hygiene. The result? A new local industry, better school attendance and more than 1,800 happier, more focused female students. 10 Around the world, over the past year SNV has participated in events and coalitions addressing some the most pressing development challenges facing us all today. From the 4th UN High Level Forum on Aid effectiveness in Busan, to COP 17 in Durban, World Water Week, or the the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting and the Society for International Development (SID) World Congress in Washington D.C., SNV has been there to share our expertise and make sure our voice gets heard.
