Our partners Inclusive growth from the bottom up Fostering entrepreneurship and building opportunity are at the core of SNV’s partnership with the BoP Innovation Center. The Base of the Pyramid (BoP) is the term given to the largest but poorest socioeconomic group worldwide, covering more than four billion people. In spite of their socioeconomic position, these people are economically active as consumers, producers, entrepreneurs and employees. They also represent a huge potential market for companies to target. SNV has partnered with the BoP Innovation Center to create opportunity at the bottom of the pyramid by fostering innovation and entrepreneurship since 2010. From agriculture programmes in Kenya and Uganda, to water and sanitation programmes in Tanzania, Kenya and Mozambique, and sustainable energy solutions in Rwanda and Bangladesh, the intention is to not only create better access to food, sustainable and afFordable energy, and clean water in these countries, but also to create competitive local SMEs that will help to drive their economies and create employment in local communities. Based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the BoP Innovation Center is an incubator that helps companies to develop and market products specifically for the BoP. The emphasis is on co-creating inclusive innovations that help to 34 CONNECT #2 JULY 2013 improve both the social and economic wellbeing of the BoP. “There are a number of leading companies that would like to get access to these markets. The big challenge is that the people have very limited resources,” explains BoP Innovation Center Executive Director Myrtille Danse. “We work together with the private sector, civil society organisations and knowledge institutes to develop innovative products and services for low-income markets. The focus is to really develop these products and services on a market basis, so people really want to buy them and they fit their needs.” “Organisations like SNV bring certain networks and experiences that are useful for the companies interested in working in these new markets,” she adds. The BoP Innovation Center specialises in products and services within sustainable food systems, rural energy, and water and sanitation – making it an ideal partner for SNV.
