Kaleidoscope, Summer 2014 Bulgarian distributor ‘Dessi-T’, celebrates 20 years existence A success story based on vision, partnership and determination Earlier this year Michael Totev and his brother Ivo from Dessi-T welcomed their employees, AkzoNobel partners, and many key stakeholders in the Bulgarian automotive industry to the company’s 20 year anniversary celebration. This took place at the beautiful archaeological museum in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia. While the setting for the party was stunning the success of the company is even more impressive. In only 20 years since opening their first retail shop the Totev brothers have built the largest distributor company in Bulgaria, capturing over a third of the market. Partnership Michael, speaking at the event, reflected on the importance of the partnership with AkzoNobel to the development of their business while also describing the economy at the time he said: “20 years ago everything in Bulgaria was new, interesting, unknown and very promising, a time when new horizons and opportunities were in front of us. On a snowy 17th January 1994 we began working as the official representative of AkzoNobel in Bulgaria and we have never looked back.” Vision “Several months after we started our company Ivo and I had a big dream,” Michael continued. “Our dream was to open more shops and sell more AkzoNobel products. Today, 20 years later, thanks to the team, clients, partners and friends our dream has become a reality – with over 200 bodyshops using our products daily.” The vision included not only AkzoNobel products but also its ‘Creating Together’ philosophy. Dessi-T saw the value in working hand-in-hand with its customers. Instead of simply supplying paint they were set about helping bodyshops to improve their processes and performance with application training and support. This has meant an unusual level of investment for a distributor, including Dessi-T building and running its own training center – a level of investment which has underpinned its impressive growth. Determination Michael admits they did not always get it right first time, however with the support of AkzoNobel combined with their vision and determination they have continuously improved and evolved. Having admired the paint company’s approach to business, Dessi-T decided to use similar methods to create a successful company – investing in its people, training and supporting its customers, using innovative thinking to solve challenges and making effective use of networks. Looking forward The brothers have their eyes on the future too with a new generation and a family member, currently in higher education, due to enter the business. Success has not always been easy but Dessi-T has demonstrated that investment in its customers and partnership with AkzoNobel has helped to out-perform the competition. Today there is much to celebrate and they are already looking forward to an even more impressive future.
