Clearly a man with a mission, Govind became a strong advocate for improved stoves when, as a 14-year-old in Piuthan who did his homework by an oil lamp, he couldn’t bear to see his mother suffer chronic eye and lung infections because of exposure to smoke from the kitchen fire. “I knew we had to get the smoke out somehow, so I made a hole in the roof and installed a chimney,” he recalls. Now Govind is committed to making every Nepali household smokeless. He believes it is possible to eliminate indoor air pollution in the next four years and together with SNV, WWF, and IUCN he is dedicated to meeting this deadline by promoting the improved cookstove. Sabdiyo Dido is SNV’s Regional Coordinator for Eastern & Southern Africa. With an MBA in strategic management and a BSc in agricultural economics, Sabdiyo has over 16 years of experience working across international development and currently specialises in are agricultural economics and strategic management. “My role as regional coordinator is fascinating because I have a responsibility to ensure that countries perform well and benefit from synergies. What drives me most are new ideas and challenges. SNV has undergone major transformation and I am proud of have been part of this change.” Jorge Alvarez-Sala is a Rural Engineer and MBA with extensive experience in the Water 1,200 We collaborate with over local partners Sanitation and Hygiene sector. For more than 12 years he has been working in both the private sector and with international NGOs in different countries and contexts. He is the WASH Sector Leader of SNV in Vietnam, where he is responsible for the implementation and scaling up of the Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All (SSH4A) programme, provides content leadership to the team, and leads fundraising for new SNV WASH projects. “SNV shares with the government of Vietnam the commitment to ensure sustainable sanitation and hygiene for all.
