Marc “It delights me when I see that hard work, good planning and the right approach result in a great product with excellent flavour and quality. ” When did you start to grow berries? “After I graduated, about 8 years ago, I became a partner in our family business. Back then, we produced crops such as potatoes, beets, onions, endive, spinach, peas and common herbs. I wanted to try something different and started with a small plot of strawberries. What kind of berries do you grow? “The majority of my volume is in strawberries, which I grow on table tops, as the clay soil is not optimum for strawberry production. However, this type of production has been beneficial to our method of working, as picking is easier and I suffer less from pest problems. In the recent years, I have worked with several varieties, such as Driscoll’s® Amesti™ , Serena™ Diamond™ , Camarillo and Driscoll Jubilee. Currently, I grow one of the new varieties: Driscoll’s® . After having grown strawberries for two years, I started to produce raspberries, which are very profitable. This year I have also designated a small area to blackberries and I hope to expand this in the future.” Why do you like to grow Driscoll’s berries? “First of all, I like it because Driscoll’s invests a lot in the development of new varieties and regularly launches new varieties per season. In my opinion, these varieties perform better on flavour and quality - but also on profitability - than public varieties. What is great is that I can work with the Driscoll’s agronomy team to find the best growing conditions for the new varieties. Also, I like the international character of Driscoll’s, as I find it very interesting to learn from my colleagues, and Driscoll’s offers me the opportunity to do so.
