Innovation LEAF: Lowering Emissions in Asia’s Forests Both forest loss and forest degradation are important factors in global climate change – accounting for almost 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. But despite this knowledge, our forests continue to be destroyed at an alarming rate. According to the FAO, between 2000 and 2010 the world lost about 130 million hectares of forest; roughly 3.2 percent of the total forest area in 2000. It’s clear that action is needed. And there’s no time to waste. Reducing Emissions through Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) is a global set of measures to address these challenges, providing incentives for communities to preserve their forests, reduce emissions and invest in low-carbon paths to sustainable development. 28 CONNECT #2 JULY 2013 SNV is implementing global REDD+ strategies in Southeast Asia and West and Central Africa, focusing on three main areas within international REDD+ mechanisms: Multiple Benefits, Low Emission Development Strategies and the new REDD Energy and Agriculture Programme. A highlight of SNV’s international REDD+ work is the USAID-funded Lowering Emissions in Asia’s Forests (LEAF) programme. Along with partners Winrock International, Climate Focus and The Center for People and Forests (RECOFTC), SNV is developing REDD+ procedures and processes in Asia through LEAF, strengthening the capacity of countries throughout the region to achieve meaningful and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from the forestry/land-use sector. LEAF’s activities centre on technical knowledge sharing to support a sub-national REDD+ approach across the region. LEAF has already provided over 7,000 hours of training, developed eight regional support tools and strengthened seven laws and policies. In the months ahead LEAF will introduce and support sustainable land and forest management for over 1 million hectares of forest, increasing benefits for more than 5,200 people in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia.
