By creating demonstration gardens at 730 primary schools around the country, SNV and partners have helped parents improve their food production – while also encouraging greater involvement in their children’s education. What’s more, by encouraging parents to plant their own demonstration gardens and mentor others in their community, the programme has the potential to grow exponentially – and that’s good news for every family. 8 In Burkina Faso, the agricultural industry is getting a boost through innovative renewable energy technologies. Seeing an opportunity to create value from agricultural waste, SNV and local partner ISOMET worked to introduce gasification technology to Burkina Faso – enabling waste shells to be used to power production in the cashew industry. At the Dakoro-based Wouol Association gasifier implementation has reduced workloads and helped cut production costs by more than 80%, pointing to a bright future for this locally produced innovation. 9 Cassava is a hot commodity in Democratic Republic of Congo, but low productivity, high transaction costs and poor market information means smallholder farmers struggle to benefit from the trade. But with SNV’s help farmers are taking the power into their own hands by forming cooperatives. By sharing improved production techniques and new cassava varieties, the cooperatives are boosting farmer productivity, as well as improving their bargaining power – and their incomes! So far 11 new cassava cooperatives have been formed, benefiting over 1,450 farmers. 10 In mountainous rural Bolivia, water scarcity remains a problem for many communities. But a lack of water doesn’t have to mean a lack of sanitation. Dry ecological toilets offer a solution that doesn’t require water or access to complex sewage systems. SNV designed a microcredit scheme for low-income families to enable them to access dry toilets, along with a social marketing campaign to promote the importance of proper sanitation. Now, a recent study of the sanitation value chain for Water for People and UN HABITAT is paving the way for lessons from the project to be applied in Ecuador, where 50% of the population lives without access to public sewage systems. 6 69,000 production for farmers in Rwanda 700,000 people using biogas in Vietnam JULY 2013 CONNECT #2 7 Pagina 6
