We spoke to Minister Ploumen about her vision and the changing face of international development cooperation. 8 CONNECT #2 JULY 2013 Why should we invest in development? What makes development a wise investment? There are endless reasons why we should invest in development, whether it be the textile worker in Bangladesh who risks her life to make our jeans and t-shirts, the girl who sees her mother raped and murdered in eastern Congo or the Ethiopian farmer whose crops go to waste because of a lack of proper irrigation. And let’s not forget our direct self-interest: new markets to explore, greater stability and security and a better chance to safeguard international public goods such as the climate, migration, food security and water. And we have every reason to be proud of our return on investment in a world that is witnessing unprecedented progress on poverty indicators. We have seen a great deal of criticism of both the development industry and historical aid modalities in recent years. How do you react to claims that aid has been a failure so far? Those who claim aid is a failure ignore the facts. Both the Human Development Index and the advances made towards the Millennium Development Goals show that the progress is real and significant.
