Kaleidoscope, Summer 2014 The perfect line Play & Spray winner’s trip to stateof-the-art McLaren facility in Woking Daniel Streng, of Streng GmbH Baierdorf, proved he was master of the perfect line winning last year’s Play & Spray online game. His record time of 46.7056 seconds, set shortly before the end of the contest, secured victory and with it the coveted prize-winner’s trip to the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, near London. It was here that 24-year old Daniel stood, on 17th April this year, next to the front spoiler of one of McLaren’s current Formula 1 cars, with an airbrush gun in his hand. Again he had to find the perfect line, but this time under the strict gaze of ‘Lusty’ Lawrence Manning – an airbrush specialist from the McLaren Formula 1 paintshop team that featured in Sikkens’ ‘Painters’ campaign. But there is more to the story than that. When Play & Spray ended in September, not everyone in the Streng family was smiling. Daniel’s 29-year old brother Benjamin, who also works for the Acoat Selected bodyshop, had been leading in the competition, on the virtual Sikkens race track, until the last second. Entering the bodyshop to congratulate the winner, Sikkens’ Sales Manager for South Germany, Heiko Hippman, could sense tension between the brothers. He then came up with the ultimate surprise: both of them would visit McLaren! “That was really a super gesture from Sikkens,” said Daniel. Laughing with Benjamin, he added: “My brother and I took the bodyshop over from our parents and we work together very closely in running it. We are glad our rivalry over the prize was not allowed to come between us.” The brothers traveled to England on 16th April to visit McLaren the following day. “The Technology Centre was incredibly impressive,” Daniel recalled. The semi-circular building’s breathtaking design, by famous architect Norman Foster, is as flat and streamlined as a McLaren racing car and it combines with an artificial lake to complete a full circle. Daniel and Benjamin joined Armin Dürr, Technical Coordinator DACH for AkzoNobel, on an exclusive tour of the facility, including its collection of legendary McLaren cars from six decades. They also visited the futuristic wind tunnel, cooled by water from the lake, the pit stop training station and, of course, the McLaren F1 Racing Team’s workshop. Here the Streng brothers met ‘The Painters’, who shared stories with them from the racing world. The team had specially prepared the front spoiler on which Daniel and Benjamin hoped to prove themselves as airbrush artists. This was particularly challenging for Daniel because, unlike his brother, he is a panel beater and not a painter. Describing their performance as “passable”, Daniel said, with a wink, “The Painters did chuckle a bit when looking at our line.” Then as quick as any true champion he added: “But they do this every day. I think with a little practice we would get this done quickly as well!” It seems that nothing can stand in the way of our Sikkens Play & Spray champion’s Formula 1 career!
